A GUIDE FOR PARENTS/CARERS IN FOOTBALL

It is imperative to understand that parents/carers play a vital role in a child’s footballing development. You, as much as the child’s personality and ability, dictate whether this is for pleasure or something serious. It can honestly be said that, in the last twenty-five years, experience and evidence has suggested that there has been a mixture of those children that have gone on to enjoy football, continue participation and progress towards a positive path; whilst in turn, those children who have expressed their lost for joy of football, drive to continue and consequently dropping out of participation, as a result of the pressure to pleasing their parents/carers.

However, at FC Wood Green, the environment is designed for inclusivity and to ensure that everybody involved is to be guided in a positive and harmonious nature, in terms of a child’s football development, and how parents/carers support their child(s) during training sessions and matchdays. Whilst the club is signing the player to represent FC Wood Green, parents/carers are also engaged with and kept in the loop of the work and vision that is taking place, or is to be. With that being said, having all on board and on the same page increases the probability of a safe, fun and progressive environment.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR SUPPORTIVE PARENTS/CARERS

Children develop in different ways, and at different ages they also react differently in certain situations. Having said that, the intention at FC Wood Green is to provide all children a worthwhile experience, and help them enjoy and appreciate the game of football. It is the child’s game and they are playing for themselves first and foremost. Parent/carers cannot play the game for the child, and it is understandable that the child will not play football as the way an adult sees the game or wants it to be played.

As parents/carers, you have entrusted the care of your child to the coach(s), and if during action a player is receiving multiple instructions from different angles, it is confusing, especially at the younger age groups; consequently, this could result to a decline in decision-making and performance levels. Therefore, it is instructed by the club that there is to be no instructions or coaching whilst the children are under the supervision of the coach(s). However, it is worth noting that there is a difference between instructions and encouragement; therefore, parents/carers applauding and encouraging good play is fully acceptable.
